There is something special about a home where bread is being made. The smell of yeast blooming in a warm kitchen, the quiet rhythm of kneading dough, and the anticipation of pulling golden loaves from the oven—it feels like a small way of bringing warmth and care into everyday life.
As a homemaker, I find so much joy in the ordinary tasks that fill our days. Baking bread for my family is not just about the finished loaf—it is about the process. It is about creating a home where my children can walk into the kitchen and find something homemade waiting for them. It is about slowing down enough to appreciate the little things.
This recipe makes two beautiful loaves, which makes it perfect for a family kitchen. One loaf can be enjoyed fresh while the other can be saved for sandwiches, toast, or a cozy breakfast later in the week.
Whether you are just beginning your bread-making journey or you have been baking for years, I hope this recipe encourages you to make something simple and nourishing for the people you love. A loaf of homemade bread may seem like a small thing, but often the smallest acts of homemaking are the ones that create the sweetest memories.
RECIPE:
- 2 1/2 cups warm milk
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons yeast
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1/3 cup oil
- 6 1/2–7 cups flour (bread flour recommended)
INSTRUCTIONS:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5–10 minutes until the yeast becomes foamy and active.
- Add the apple cider vinegar, salt, and oil. Stir until combined.
- Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing as you go. Continue adding flour until the dough becomes soft and slightly tacky, but no longer sticky.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5–8 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and allow it to rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Once risen, gently punch down the dough and divide it into two equal portions.
- Shape each portion into a long loaf. Place the loaves on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet (sprinkled with cornmeal if desired).
- Cover the loaves loosely with a towel and allow them to rise again for about 30 minutes, until they become puffy.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- Using a sharp knife, make a few shallow diagonal slashes across the top of each loaf.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the loaves are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.
- Remove from the oven and allow the bread to cool slightly before slicing.
Enjoy warm with butter, serve alongside a family meal, or save a loaf for sandwiches and toast throughout the week.
